Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

i have fedora 19 and kde. this is a rather annoying thing, i used to be able to move the desktop icons around but after an update in 17 and since haven't been able to. i assume there is some setting i am missing since i can't find very much searching on it. the only thing i can find is gnome-tweak-tool but for obvious reasons that doesn't work with kde. can anyone help me with this?
they dont move at all. if i click on them they do nothing. when add an icon it adds in some sort of odd order. i can do nothing to move anything on my desktop and haven't since an update in fc17. i am not sure if kmod-nvidia has anything to do with this...
one more thing, i have installed fc19 with kde and nvidia drivers on another computer as well. it was an older build. on neither desktop, and not the desktop folder widit thing, rather the rest of the screen, i have no control over the icons. i have tried to move them in almost every way and have searched for a setting to no avail...
Distribution: Debian Sid AMD64, Raspbian Wheezy, various VMs
I suppose it could be an NVIDIA driver thing -- I installed KDE Plasma Desktop onto an existing Fedora 19 which was running XFCE4. The icons can be dragged and dropped as in Windows, XFCE or any other similar environment. Those in the "Plasmid" [I think is the term] could be dragged onto the desktop and moved around and dragged back.
I'm sorry I know that's no help but it sounds like a bug in your specific case rather than a bug in KDE on Fedora 19.
this is just the standard installation of kde on fc19. by default in the upper left corner i have a widgit which is what you describe which is the window to a desktop folder or whatever. the rest of the screen is what is commonly called the desktop. that screen is what i am referring to where i cannot move the icons around. when i create an icon, i do not control where it is created nor can i move it after it is created. there is no auto-alignment that i can tell unless the auto-alignment were drunk (actually i think it is probably auto-aligning i just wanted to say it isnt ordered very well).
with the widgets unlocked on the desktop
add a launcher -- say from Applacations/ games / WordWarVi ( any game )
r-click it and select "add to desktop" ( it the widgets are not unlocked you can only "add to favorites" )
mouse over the launcher on the desktop
see the tool bar pop out from the side
drag that tool bar around
yeah, i guess i missed that i had to use the toolbar or handle. i must have not had to do that before so stupidly enough, even though i hit ever part of that handle, i never grabbed it to move the icon around. i kind of assumed it was something dumb i was missing and indeed...
