KDE 3 - Creating panel applets how to

Anyone know of a good how to resource for creating KDE 3 panel applets? All I can find is but the tar.gz file with the examples doesn't have anything on the end of it. (I've found a reference to this issue dated 2002.) Since the tutorial doesn't contain enough information to for me to understand it without the .tar.gz file the tutorial is no use to me.

I'd like to create a fairly simple applet. It would need to do little more than display a single colour (like the hello world example), based upon data retrieved from a website. I have virtually no C++ experience but I figure that since the example applet does almost what I need, and I can always do the data retrieval part separately, I may be able to adapt it without too much trouble.

Have you looked at Qt4?

It is open source and works across several platforms.

applet, kde, panel
