Question Is KOffice just OpenOffice.org built for Qt?

Hi,

I am wondering weither KOffice is just a Qt version of OpenOffice.org? - is KOffice based in OpenOffice.org?

Koffice is an independent KDE project that was started way before OpenOffice.

However, KOffice does use the same OpenDocument format that OpenOffice does. This means that documents created in OpenOffice can be viewed in KOffice.

I mean; do they render documents the same way? - or will there be differences?

I've never really used KOffice to nay great extent, but it is definitely different from OpenOffice.org.

From what I can gather the Koffice implementation of odf is non-standard, so even though it supports odf to a degree it might not import or export all the formatting correctly.

That's what I hear a while ago. I can't verify from personal experience whether there are any compatibility problems, and I don't know whether it's still true with more recent versions of KOffice.

Do you have a source for that? Or know anything about the current development process?

Koffice 1.6 is supposed to be quite compliant with the ODF standards. I think it was koffice 1.5 that did not have a proper implementation of ODF.

OpenOffice is so good---why bother with KOffice?

For simple, use Abiword.

I bother with KOffice as it is written for Qt and runs faster in KDE.

I use OpenOffice mainly because KOffice doesn't support the Microsoft formats, but it's painfully slow to get loaded in the first place.
