IMAP folder incompatibility between Evolution and Thunderbird

I have been using Evolution at work, and tried Thunderbird at home a couple days ago on the same IMAP server and login. I ended up with 2 "Junk" folders and 2 "Trash" folders. I can look at what is on the actual server where the maildir format is in use. It seems that Evolution uses a "T" tag on the file, leaving it in the "cur" subdirectory, for deleted mail, but Thunderbird creates an actual ".Trash" directory ("Trash" folder) for its trash.

This will make a mess of things for some mailboxes that need to be shared between users that prefer Evolution and users that prefer Thunderbird. Anyone know how to make these work better together?

Your stalemate problem is that Evolution is not standards compliant while Mozilla Thunderbird is. The latter will honor server-supplied namespaces for both public as well as private folder names and you can override them in your prefs.js (IMAP_Trash_folder example).

Does the IMAP standard say that a folder named ".Trash" is where trash really should go? I actually like the way Evolution works better. One reason is that trash doesn't lose what folder it originally was in. Presumably I can "untrash" a message and have it in the original folder it was in before trashing it.
