May I ask why you want to install Internet Exploder? One thing Linux is not short of is browsers. I can think of five off the top of my head and all of them work better than IE. I am not sure what you mean by "official usage" or how it would pertain to using the internet.

You could try this too

ies4linux is actually outdated, you want winetricks

the instructions at the beginning of the page work, at least somewhat decent.

A high proportion of Windows users replace IE with Firefox or Chromium. Why do you want something that even many Windows users don't want?

I guess people want it for use internally with things like IIS that use NTLM authentication which Firefox does not play well with out of the box. Firefox can use NTLM by changing the "network.automatic-ntlm-auth.trusted-uris" preference, in about:config, and listing your internal URL(s).

some people, myself included, are web application developers, and have to do some cursory tests in IE, but don't want to be bothered to have a full windows machine (or a windows virtual machine) just to test things in Internet explorer, and before you come back with the 'test in IE' web based services, you can't effectively test web applications that require authentication to use with those services. TRUE, IE under WINE isn't the most optimum setup by a long shot, but it works.
internet exploder is unfortunately a necessary evil in a web developer's toolbox.

true BUT ie4linux is internet explorer 6
yes 6

and wine tricks is IE7 that some are putting a 6.8 % tax on the use of ( the "tax" is in the news )

and one really dose need to use IE9 for web development
if nothing else the MS compatibility list for IE8 and the old ie7&6 MS web development tools ie only web sites

but if one MUST use ie them please do your self a favor and use the CURRENT version of IE
boot win7 in a VM and use ie that way
