icons on the desktop instead of the tray

Is there anyway of getting the icons to land on the desktop instead of the tool tray with GNOME? Another possiblity is to not create a placeholder spot for open windows. Having ICONs in the tray that move make it a total pain when trying to locate a specific window

Unfortunately you will not get any reply in this forum since it requires skills and experience in linux.

It might be possible to use the mac os x engage thing into the docking bar, but it does not work anymore.
