Icons from Desktop are gone when SAMBA is configured

Hi All,

(Doing some lab practice) We are facing this problem when we configure SAMBA on our Red Hat 5 system and restart the system we don't see any icons on the Desktop of Red Hat. However, the standard menu bar is still present.

So, how to get the icons back on the Desktop?

Thanks!

The desktop display is unrelated to running the samba server. It probably has to do with rebooting. Are you using Gnome or KDE or another desktop environment?

Using GNOME Desktop on RHEL 5.2

Anyways, how to get the icons back? They were not manually or by mistake deleted. They are just not appearing after the reboot when SAMBA was configured..

Do you still have the .desktop files in ~/Desktop?
Did you inadvertently change the permissions for ~/Desktop denying you permission to enter it or read the files?
Is the gnome-session program running?
