Unhappy I very frequently receive Error 21 using Ubuntu 8.4.

I have Ubuntu 8.4 installed on a separate external hard drive and had Grub on my old machine. The internal hard drive crashed so I am transferring everything to another computer we had sitting around. I have to reinstall Grub on this machine. All suggestions would be helpful.

Another question I have is "what does Error 21 mean and what should I do about it?" This kept coming up on my old setup and I would do a Ctrl-Alt-Delete maybe a couple of times before the Grub list would come up.

I would appreciate all the help I can get on these questions.

Grub error 21 means "Selected Disk does not Exist". You can get detailed information by googlin "Gnu Grub Manual". If you are still using Ubuntu 8.04, it uses Legacy Grub. Ubuntu beginning with 9.10 uses Grub2. Big differences! What operating system do you have or are you installing on the new machine?

I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 and now the grub will not come up at all. I do an F10 and select my external hard drive on which I have Ubuntu installed. I would rather have the grub come up. Can you tell me how to reinstall or update the grub? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have installed Vista on my internal drive.

Do you still have Ubuntu 11.04 on the external drive? Got to the site below and read Section 12 for different methods to reinstall Grub on Ubuntu.
