Hulu desktop client or the website? I visit the website in for Hulu all the time all you need is the flashplayer. As far as the desktop client I can't recall if there is a linux version yet, I have not tried to install it.

To see the desktop application on your browser go to http://download.hulu.com/huludesktop.swf

I have downloaded the hulu desktop for unbuntu which I see many folks use on debian lenny. I just can't figure out how to install it. It comes down as a folder named huludesktop_i386.deb. I have followed the instructions from there site as they suggest to use the command dpkg -i huludesktop after navigating to the directory which it resides. here is the report

jon@debianlenny:~$ su
Password:
debianlenny:/home/jon# cd Desktop
debianlenny:/home/jon/Desktop# dpkg -i huludesktop
dpkg: error processing huludesktop (--install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory
Errors were encountered while processing:
huludesktop
debianlenny:/home/jon/Desktop#

I have downloaded several times just to make sure the copy is good

Only 3 months experience with linux so It may be something realy simple I am not doing corectly

Is it better to try with Synaptic? If so how do I list the location and file in the repositories?

Also I do not find Flashplayer listed in the repositorys or on the debian lenny DVD set.

Thanks, Jon

First of all is it a .deb package, if it is are you using the full name i.e.
Code:
dpkg -i huludesktop.deb
If it is a deb package you could also click it from your GUI desktop and it will open up synaptic or kpackage to install it for you.

Or is it merely like some sort of front end for a web browser that you just have to click, like a script? Is it some sort of script you run that will install all that you need on your system for you?

As for flashplayer add the non-free repositories then you should see it in the repositories. It will not be in the DVD set because it is a non-free item the main distribution only includes "free" software.

That's true for Testing or Unstable but not for Lenny.
See the following link for more information:

SO shoot me, been a while since I installed, it, it's still in a non-standard repository, in this case backports, so he will need to add that to apt sources and run apt-get update before he will see the flashplayer.

Ok, got Flash installed no problem and now can view hulu vid's by visiting hulu site. I Would like to get the Hulu desktop installed properly. I have downloaded and installed it. Problem is it can not find " Flash plugin" and reports and error. Here is text reported in the error window. What is "~/.huludesktop". is it a file or directory. I can not seem to find it by searching with Nautilus.

Hulu Desktop could not locate the Flash plugin.

If you already have it installed, please modify ~/.huludesktop with the correct location of libflashplayer.so.

Any suggestions welcome, Thanks, Jon

~/.huludesktop is a fancy way of saying the huludesktop configuration folder in your home directory. ~ redirects you to /home/username and .huludesktop is a folder in your home folder. if you open a command prompt window and type ls -a you will see a bunch of hidden folders. I would go into that directory "cd .huludesktop" and see if I can locate a plugins folder, then create a symlink to the location of the libflashplayer.so file, probably located in your Mozilla or Firefox or Iceweasel plugins folder. Once you have the symlink you should be good to go.

No .huludesktop folder but a .huludesktop text file does exist. It appears to be a configuration file of some sort. here is the contents

[display]
fullscreen = FALSE
width = 1024
height = 576
pos_x = 200
pos_y = 150

[remote]
lirc_device = /dev/lircd
lirc_remote_identifier = mceusb
lirc_release_suffix = _UP
lirc_repeat_threshold = 10
button_name_up = Up
button_name_down = Down
button_name_left = Left
button_name_right = Right
button_name_select = OK
button_name_menu = Home

[flash]
flash_location = (null)

[screensaver]
suspend_script = (null)
resume_script = (null)

[version]
latest = (null)
eula_version = 1

So from a basic beginners stanpoint it would make sence to edit the file and put a path to the libflashplayer.so

Trying to figure out how to use the "find" command to locate where it is, I will try doing some more reading on syntax to use. Nautilus just hangs when I search the whole file system. Yup, kind of feel prety dumb adout now. Jon

type
Code:
updatedb
followed by
Code:
locate libflashplayer.so
it is much faster than find once the index database is built, will take a minute or two to do.

Don't know about Debian, but in Slackware the plugin goes to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins.

Command worked fast as light. Bought this book "Linux Pocket Guide"and it is generally quite usefull. Usually gets me what I need but there is no mention of this command in it. Book is tailored toward Fedora. Any simplified hand book specifically for Debian available? Anyway, everything slick as an eel now. Jon

The updatedb command is not debian specific, I would think it would be in ,ost reference books for any linux but I guess I am wrong. As far as reference books for Debian, the only ones I can think of are the Bible series for Debian, but that's a huge book, maybe look at something for ubuntu might find a smaller reference and most of that will be applicable to Debian too.

Note on updatedb you should run it every time before running locate because it will not know the location of anything you have put on your system since the last time you ran it.
