how to start window-manager with beryl

I have installed beryl and I want to start it now. I found somewhere in the Internet that I should start a window manager and launch beryl-manager. I did so but as a result my X shutdowned. What was wrong?

Eventually I launched beryl by changing symlink /etc/alternatives/x-window-manager so that it idicated /usr/bin/beryl. I typed startx and everything went well. However I received blue desktop only. There was no menu or whatever.

What should I do to launch beryl properly?

You need to start some WM first to get the actual dock/panel/menus loaded, and then let Beryl take over the rendering of the windows. Start beryl-manager from the terminal to note what error messages it shows up, and then continue from there.

I did what you said. I had fluxbox started and typed beryl-manager. X server shutdowned and that was all. I ended up in text mode. Moreover, no messages it shows up. Or maybe something is show but I can't see it bacause my X turns off imidiately.

Well, that is the problem there. Beryl and Compiz only work with KDE, GNOME, or XFCE4. It doesn't work with "all-in-one" WMs like BlackBox, FluxBox, IceWM, Enlightenment, etc, etc. It only works in WM/DEs that have separate programs for their different functions (I.E. the window manager itself must be a totally separate application then, say, the panel).
