What distribution (version) of Linux are you using?

Has this computer worked previously---i.e. is this a new problem?

When it gets to this message, see if you can get a command-line by typing ctrl-alt-F1

See if you can boot into single-user mode:

When the GRUB menu appears, hit any key to stop the countdown. Then "e" for edit. To the line beginning with "kernel", add the word "single" at the end, and then reboot ("b" in grub). Once it is running, look at /etc/x11/gdm/gdm.conf and tell us what's there.

You can also boot from a live CD and look at this file.
