What you can do is start a new X-session on a different tty (screen) which should leave the apps running in the first session untouched. (This is how some display managers [e.g., KDM] allow multiple log-ins of different users using the the same physical display/keyboard.)
Might one ask what you're trying to accomplish? Your stated goal sounds much like "How can I have my cake after I finished eating it?"
I want to have an ability to change some X settings which need server restart without restarting applications, connected to that same server. I guess that to realize it i may have to hack Xorg, but i am still interested.
just look at some bugs in X and youll figure it out....
google "tossed event which came in late".
ive personally ran programs in X with X non respondent(Im not lying).
which has led me to believe there is alot of the
xserver that isnt needed...(a whole lot).
let me know what you figure out.
ps...try fluxbox you can reset the session without killling the apps. wont restart X but depending on what your looking for might work.
