How to improve fonts in Linux GUI

Hello,
I have been using Linux for the last 4 years.. and tried different distributions..
somehow i always feel that the font texture in linux gui (KDE or GNOME) is not quite as good as it should be (for example in comparison to *indows)...

can you suggest some tricks to improve the fonts ..

regards,
kanwar
