Manual method
Since you asked for either automated or manual, here is a manual method:
1. Right-click the k menu button on the panel and select 'Menu Editor'.
2. Navigate to the location in the menu where you want to add items using the pane on the left.
3. Click the 'New Item' button on the tool bar. A 'New Item' dialog appears where you can name the entry.
4. Type a name for the new menu entry.
5. The right pane fills with a form where you can supply information about the menu entry. Fill in the information needed to run the software, the most important part being the 'Command:' text box.
6. Click the 'Save' button on the tool bar when you are done.
