How to connect Kaffeine to X-server?

I recently upgraded to Kaffeine 0.8.2-5, running on KDE 3.5.1-18 on Open SuSE 10.1. When I start Kaffeine, the icon bounces for half a minute, then the app quits without any error messages. I ran it as root and got the error message

Failed to connect to X-Server

Went to Sourceforge, looked at the FAQs and the very first one was

1. Kaffeine don't start. What can i do?
Probably an x-server problem. Try to run configure --with-xorg and make - make install again. Should help.

I didn't install this from a local compile, I updated with an RPM from packman. I tried downgrading to 0.7.1-28 and got the same result. I can use other xine video players with no problems, but I'm trying to learn something about my system by fixing this.

Being a noob, I don't have a clue as to how to do this. I'd appreciate a patient step-by-step on how to to fix this problem, although I'd also appreciate being pointed to the source of a technical reference that has enough detailed info to let me figure out how to do this myself. (Most books either assume you don't know where the start menu is or that you can code in 17 different languages. Is there anyhting in between?)

I've been keeping everything updated with Smart updater pointing to the usual mirrors and repositories (i.e. packman and open suse). If it matters, I have an 866MHz P3, 160GB SATA HD, 512MB RAM, nVIDIA FX5200 plus and a first-gen Audigy card.

As a user under KDE session, the error messages are logged in in the file : /home/<user_name>/.xsession-errors
Post what concerns Kaffeine in this file when you try to run it.
Or run it in a Konsole under user login not root.

Do you run it in a root console ? Because that can't work with a graphical program.
Instead use:
Chameleon KMenu
Run Commands...
Command: /opt/kde3/bin/kaffeine
Options>>
Run as a different user
Username: root
Password: *******

Then click the Run button

Or instead of all this, in a user Konsole :
kdesu /opt/kde3/bin/kaffeine

Without the exact error messages we cannot go further at this time. So post again with the required infos.

Hi berbae,

Sorry about the long wait. I reverted to the previous version, using Smart to install it. I then reinstalled the latest version, after which kaffeine worked perfectly. It would have been nice to know what went wrong, but at least it works now. Thanks for trying to help.
