How to clear KMail configuration and start from scratch?
KMail has been driving me crazy all day. It was working fine yesterday but today it either:
1.) hasn't been showing any mail on our mail server (IMAP) 2.) it has been showing mail but not anything from today 3.) it's creating new accounts for me. I launched it again a while ago and I now have four accounts in the left-hand panel (there should be three). The new one is a duplicate of an account on the IMAP server. In case 1.) all of the panels in KMail were blank. No accounts were listed and there was, obviously, no message list. In case 2.) I was able to list emails but nothing in the message list was newer than yaesterday. In case 3.) I have "local folders", my "netadmin" account, my personal account, and another version of my personal account. (I guess more is better, eh?) One of the personal accounts still doesn't show any mail newer than yesterday so the new one isn't quite a duplicate. When I go into Code:
Settings->Configure KMail->Accounts Q1: What I'd like to do is whack the KMail configuration and start over from scratch with KMail. How do I do that? Q2: Could this be connected with a problem with KWallet? Will some cleanup be needed in that application's configuration? For now Evolution's mail piece is working correctly and I can use it in the short term. I recently moved to KMail when Evolution's calendar notifications stopped working (plus I was dissatisfied with the way Evolution limited the appearance of emails -- especially those with links). One other bit that would also be nice to resolve: My local mail folders from Evolution are not visible using KMail. Normally I wouldn't care so much but that's where I retain copies of Sent mail. Losing those would sort of suck although I can still access them from Evolution. (I'm not sure where Evolution even created those. :/ This should probably should be in another thread, though.) Versions/environment/etc ('cuz someone'll ask): OpenSUSE 12.2 (32-bit) , KMail 4.8.4. TIA... -- Rick (Now I'm off to track down that old thread I started about Horde to see if I can use that as a replacement for both these turkeys^Wemail clients.) |
Update:
I went into the "Accounts" dialog in "Configure KMail" and deleted the "personal" account listed there. Sure enough... it deleted the account listed on KMail's left-hand panel that was working properly. The version of my "personal" account that won't list new mail is still there and now there's no way to remove it.
I then fired up YaST and removed "kmail". Then reinstalled it. (It pulled down V4.8.5 as opposed to 4.8.4.) The broken account is still listed in KMail. I had a feeling that deleting the kmail package would not remove the configuration files but thought it was worth a try. (That would have been too easy but I'm left wondering why you'd leave them around if you were removing the software. What else could possibly need them?) So the question remains: How does one revert to a factory-fresh KMail so that you can start over with configuration? (Hopefully the KMail configuration is not intertwined with a slew of other config files. I'm not keen on blowing away the entire ".kde4" directory tree and losing all of the other customizations I've done just to fix one application.) Again, TIA... -- Rick |

But... I can't delete mail any more. Whenever I delete mail, it disappears, but a few seconds later, it reappears in my Inbox. What a crock. (I think it's time to revisit Mutt as a mail client.) Any ideas as to what's going on with KMail? -- Rick |
