how to change number of lines scrolled by mouse?

I'm running FC8, and trying to change number of lines scrolled by the mouse scroll wheel. It looks like every application I tried (Office DocViewer, Firefox, vim) moves three lines on every scroll of the wheel. I checked Firefox setting (about:config), and all "mousewheel" is set to 1, which makes me think that '3-line' option is a default value somewhere in the driver, and might be changed through some kind of configuration.

Unfortunately GUI: System->Preferences->Hardware->Mouse doesn't have the relevant option.

There are few posts advising how to fix mouse by editing xorg.com, but I didn't find anything about my topic.

In my /etc/X11/xorg.con I have:

PHP Code:
Section "InputDevice"

Identifier  "Synaptics"

Driver      "synaptics"

Option      "Device" "/dev/input/mice"

Option      "Protocol" "auto-dev"

Option      "Emulate3Buttons" "yes"

Option      "LeftEdge" "120"

Option      "RightEdge" "830"

Option      "TopEdge" "120"

Option      "BottomEdge" "650"

Option      "FingerLow" "14"

Option      "FingerHigh" "15"

Option      "MaxTapMove" "110"

Option      "VertScrollDelta" "20"

Option      "HorizScrollDelta" "20"

Option      "MinSpeed" "0.3"

Option      "MaxSpeed" "0.75"
EndSection
Does anybody knows how to fix this?

I believe that the setting that you seek is situated between the X software and the application. What window manager software are you using? You should be able to configure mouse settings in your window manager. If you are using KDE then you run kcontrol, then select Peripherals | Mouse | Advanced. Gnome has gnome_control to set these sorts of things. Less sophisticated window managers may just have a text file to edit.

Actually my environment is Gnome. And I tried to go through the window manager: System->Preferences->Hardware->Mouse (essentially same as gnome-control-center) but it doesn't have 'wheelscroll' option.

Maybe some applications can overwrite X default, but my Firefox 3.0.4. scrolls 3 lines even though I set it to 1.

I also notice that changing Mouse options in the window doesn't update xorg.conf file in which, as I thought, all these info is stored.

I don't know where this parameter (Mouse-wheel scrolls by X lines) is set for the system, but it is not in xorg.conf
As stress_junkie says, it it easy to change in KDE, and I don't use gnome

You can change it in firefox though:
about:config
Set mousewheel.withnokey.sysnumlines to false and
Set mousewheel.withnokey.numlines to the number of lines you want to scroll for each click of the wheel.
The change is effective immediately.

Thanks tredegar,

Setting mousewheel.withnokey.sysnumlines = false made mousewheel.withnokey.numlines = 1 working in Firefox.

But I'm still curious: where is it set generically in Gnome?

Searching leads me to believe that it is not configurable in gnome, unless you want to find out where it is set in the gnome source code, modify it and recompile.

It is easy to change in KDE 3.X.Y, but KDE has always been more configurable than gnome, which is why I prefer KDE. Some people dislike "too much choice" though.
