sounds like (no pun intended) the mixer headphone volume is either mute or turned down.

if you have kde try kmix to kmix can not mute headphones but OUTPUT tab has volume slider.

if you have gnome can not help with a gnome specific, but you can open a shell and run with root powers

alsamixer if you are using alsa.

ok, it may be bios mixup.....is sound onboard to motherboard or do you have separate soundcard?

2) check your kdeinfo center....pci for what pci cards are detected......and sound for various sound stuff

check your /var/log/dmesg for what hardware is detected at boot.

your kernel module may not be loading?....

open a shell and try commands

su (and root password)

lspci.....to show separate sound card pci type detected?

lsmod.....to show if onboard module for ac97? loaded and others will be like snd-* including the card you have eg snd_emu10k1
