Has Linux Mint been discontinued?

Rumor in West GA is that Linux Mint has been discontinued..

rtmistler 03-19-2018 09:38 AM

Is there any reference, or is this just pure rumor?

Their site appears no differently today than it has the last year or so.

My answer is "No it has not been discontinued", seeing as their site is still active and actively updating information and responding to user's questions.

Instead of helping to spread this rumour, why don't you have a look at the Mint website or ask Mint directly (root@linuxmint.com).

Seriously, we haven't come very far at all since the days of the Salem witch trials... all it takes is for some idiot to start a rumour and everyone spreads it without even making the slightest effort to see if it is true or not.

A friend who intro'd to Linux told me this last night. Trying to stop the rumor. Website is fine but he won't listen. I'm waiting for 19 to come out...'Sides I always check things such as this. That's why I'm here...

Friends sometimes are easier to bear with a grain of salt.

It is good you checked here and checked the site. Some folks just can't be convinced. So best you let that go in one ear and out the other.

I have friends who are avid trump supporters. In their 60's. Then they lose their job and no one will re-hire them because of their age.
I don't try and convince them that their thinking may be a little off either.

Mint has a bigger team than the distro I run. Probably a bigger team than this forum is based on and supports also. Mint Linux is fine and dandy as long as Ubuntu is fine and dandy. Ubuntu has a huge team.

Now I am curious, did your "friend" make a suggestion of what to use instead, Windows or iOS perhaps?

That's fair enough but I've always found that the best way to verify whether a rumour is true is to go as straight to the subject of the rumour as possible, as privately as possible, and ask them. Anything else is just adding to the rumour mill (and in no way stopping it). Of course, when you find out either way what the truth is then by all means shout it from the rooftops if you think that will be of benefit. :)

If someone is determined to believe a falsehood, there's little you can do to dissuade him or her.

Barnum was right.

Actually I did not ask and if he wants to leave Linux that is his problem. I'm trying to make certain that he doesn't scare off any of the friends we have in common.

There's a small possibility that your friend is in fact getting confused with the fact that the KDE/Plasma desktop environment is not going to be included as a Mint flavour from Mint 19 onwards, as the Linux Mint team want to concentrate their efforts on the Gnome-derived Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce.

Segfault is dead, I "hear" but that's just a "blog". try https://blog.linuxmint.com/

The first release in the upcoming Linux Mint 19.x series will be named “Tara”.

People are free to make their own decisions. If everyone preferred Mint, then there would be no other distributions available.

If someone is purportedly using false information to sway the opinion of others, the only real thing that can be done is to refute that information. People can, and should, make up their own minds on the matter.
