I would think that a huge part of the problem is that you're using Red Hat 9, and support of that was discontinued in 2004. It is positively ancient and probably can't handle most modern hardware. Seriously, look at a modern distro rather than trying to used this.

I think I just figured something out; Why people keep posting here saying they've downloaded Red Hat 9.

This person says they're using 'RHEL 9'. They are not using RHEL 9. RHEL 9 does not exist. The latest version of RHEL is 6.

People are failing to understand the difference between Red Hat, the free distribution that was around until 2003 before Fedora Core (now Fedora), and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), which is Red Hat's current you-have-to-give-them-money-for-it distribution. They see 'Red Hat' and see that the highest number available is 9 and download it. I've no idea from where. It's available for download here but the warning about it being out of date is quite clear.

Or maybe it's something else entirely. Whatever, there's got to be some reason like this because the number of people who post saying they've just installed Red Hat 9 is way, way, higher than it should be.

For a long time the "Linux For Dummies" book came with a CD of RH9, and I suspect those CDs are the root cause of a lot of these installs. I don't think people are downloading RH9 simply because it isn't easy to find an RH9 download, at least not from Red Hat. I've also noticed that a fair number of the RH9 posts here seem to come from parts of the planet where internet access is likely not generally available, or so expensive as to make downloading a distro prohibitive, so again I'm suspecting the CDs are the culprit.
