GSB Gnome/Compiz crashing slack 12

Running a up to date slack 12 system with nvidia drivers. Installed the gnome slack build (gsb) along with its compiz counterpart (all installations went well and everything works well) I find myself switching terminals between f7 and say f2 and half the time it works but the other half the time it freezes (i get a black screen with a mouse cursor) the mouse is moveable but nothing can be done except rebooting the system. Anyone else have this problem or have a solution.

Update: I ran gnome/compiz without gdm going in the background and it appears to work fine (the transition from terminals that is) so I am convinced the issue lays with gdm
