grub doesn`t work

hi,
at first: i know there are many topics about grub and how to fix problems with it with the command line, but after one day of searching and seeing the problem even getting worse i decided to open a new topic here.

to my problem: i`ve got openSuSE 10.2 64 bit edition. there is no other operating system on my pc. while i was trying to get my hds running i damaged the configuration of grub.
i tried many fixes for the problem i found on this forums and google (like this one).
there seem to be about 7 partitions (all openSuSE partitions...). the root (hd0,5) -> setup (hd0) command seemed to work correctly but nothing changed (the rest of hd0,0 to hd0,7 didn`t work). so i tried using the windows XP repair console with the fixmbr command. after that grub is now just loading into the grub command line (not into the shell, this one loads emmidialy after the "GRUB Loading, please wait" output. no loading screen or other output).
at last i tried repairing the system with the tool from the openSuSE installation dvd. there were some errors in the partition table but "repairing" them didn`t help.

i also don`t know how to get to the /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/menu.lst files, due to the fact the system doesn`t launches and i don`t have any knoppix cds here...

hope you can help me

ps: there is only one operating system on this machine so perhaps it would be enough to just delete grub

Have you tried using YaST to repair it? In the System section there is a boot loader module that has a button to automatically detect the proper settings for Grub and another option to restore the MBR with the proper information.

Well, you can boot from the installation cd or dvd. Then at an early point in the install process, before anything is changed on your system, there is an option to boot the installed system. I think in 10.2 it is buried behind an "other" option, the other choices being install, upgrade, and repair... I think. Once it boots up you can get to YaST, select the system section, and choose the boot loader module.

Someone else may have a better idea here, but you may want to boot from a live cd, salvage your data... assuming you have some sort of writable, removable media... and reinstall the system.

hmmm the problem is, the grub configuration isn`t written on the disc. i tried setting the otion in yast to "no bootloader" reboot the system, setting the option back to "grub" and choosing a new configuration. but as i tried to reboot the system i got the same error again, the configuration hadn`t been saved -.- the samne error occures if i try to use the repair tool from the suse DVD. does anybody know this error?
