Is there any kind of graphical login for linux? (not a graphical prompt, but a "click on user name" type of thing, like XP welcome screen)

Yes, I believe it is called the Face Browser. Last I checked it was only available for the standard greeter. You should have a gdm setup item somewhere in your menu's that you can enable this. I think it will prompt you for a password still.
