Graphic object scaling/resolution?

Hello!

Basically the problem is that when using X I want all objects to be the same size in 1024x768 resolution as when using 1280x1024 resolution. My 17" monitor really can't do 1280x1024 with a high enough refresh rate so it's really a pain using, but changing the video mode to 1024x768 enlargens the objects so it feels like using windows in 800x600. Is there some config option in X or KDE that allows to adjust the scale of objects?

What kind of monitor did you use TFT or CRT
If it is a TFT maximum refresh rate nearby 68
If it is CRT (old monitor) it is a lot higher
