thanks for the advice. I have learned that you can just put your script into /etc/init.d/ and then create a link the /etc/rc.d/ directory and use an S (start) or K (kill) in the beginning of the name and it will get carried out according the runlevel that you want it to execute in. The problem that I am having now is that my script is not running and when I try and locate any error messages under /var/log/messages I dont see any error messages. Do you know of where the error output from /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S98test_script(the name of my script)? I have tested my scipt and it works fine but when it executes under /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S98test_script it doesnt work! Does anybody have any clue how to see why the script is not executing?

um... are you sure that init.d isn't for when you boot up?
You are correct in that the /etc/init.d has the scripts that are used during the boot process but what controls when they boot are in different directories such as rc1.d - rc6.d. I am still trying to figure out why my scripts does not execute when gnome is started!
I want a script to execute and load up an application when I see the desktop. I know about->System->Preferences->Sessions. What files is control Sessions?
Same question here, it's a very old post but the first google hit for "gnome startup script". Any one knows where that configuration file may be?
Thanks!
