Gnome problem

While trying to put an optimum configuration somehow gnome conf has got a problem that is creating problem for me.

If I try to login in the init 5 in gnome as root, it gives me a freezed screen and only solution to come out of it is to powercycle it. But as a other user, it does not create any problem for me and it loads fine.

Where as I can login fine as root to KDE.

Please advise on this and which logs I can see to get an idea about the error.

It is a RHEL4 box.

Best advice is: Never start Gnome or KDE as root. There is just no need for that. Ever. When you need to run an application as root or do some configuration thing, open a terminal and type "su". That will give you root privileges. Some programs usually won't start at all when running as root or at very least tell you not to run them as root. I believe this is one of the problems you are having. So once again, my advice is, not to login as root. It is better to learn how to do this the right way ratter than "fix" a problem that not truly exists.
