Gnome not starting on openSUSE 42.1 Where to look for errors?

KDE5 runs, no problems. Selecting Gnome under my user account results in a black screen with a "x" at the position of the mouse pointer. No more reactions. "init 3" and then "init 5" on a console bring back the login screen. Other users trying Gnome come back to the login screen after 5 seconds, no inits needed.

Where would I try to locate the error? Thanks for any ideas .

Hi...

I'm not sure if I can help with this but if you can get to the desktop or at least a prompt, does "dmesg" provide any clues?

Code:
dmesg
Regards...

Thanks for the try, but no results from dmesg. Nor was there anything in /var/log/Xorg.0.log...

I had a problem almost like that with CentOS except I did not even get an X in the center of the screen. The remedy for me was to use the command Xorg --configure and made a generic xorg.conf file and put it in the X11 directory. The xorg.cong file bypassed the sections of code elsewhere that were causing the problems. I'm assuming opensuse does not already have an xorg.conf file by default.
