Gnome-How to group windows in the panel like WIN7

Hi,

When a program opens many windows, in the panel in gnome for every open window there is small window in the panel. In windows 7 you can group them per program and when you hover over them you can see them/select them individually. Is this possible in Gnome ?

I'm running Gnome Version: 2.28.2 but if needed could upgrade.

In the attached picture you can see what I mean how it kind off looks in Windows7.

Thanks.

I thought it was an option from the right-click panel properties? Something like "group by application"?

You can certainly group by application in KDE but I can't see any option in Gnome to do that (not in v2.30.2 anyway).

OK: update on the above. I opened many instances of the Calculator tool and after about 10 instances the icon on the panel shrunk to show one and when you click on it it shows a vertical list of the instances similar to the Win7 screenshot above. I tried to attach a screenshot but it wouldn't work.

Actually I may have misunderstood your question. I think Win7 only shows one icon in the panel for one or multiple instances of an open program. So, although KDE/Gnome will group multiple instances in one icon it will only seem do that when more than a certain number are opened. I'm not sure if this behaviour can be changed.

There is an option to group together windows from the same application. On the left-hand side of the window list, there is an area which looks like two vertical rows of dots. Mouse over it and right mouse-click, choose Preferences.

Now you can choose to group windows together. There is no "save" button because changes are saved automatically (hence to discard changes, simply change back anything that you changed and want to change back)

I have some screen shots but I can't see how to add them here. This might be because this is my first post to LQ.
