GNOME desktop background - how is it implemented?
I don't have a problem - I'm just curious. When you set the background in GNOME to be a JPEG, how does the software handle it? Does it convert to a bitmap once, store that in memory and use it for redrawing the background? Or does it store the JPEG in memory and decompress it on the fly when the background needs redrawing? Or something else which I've not thought of?
I tried googling for this but I couldn't find anything - I suspect the answer is out there but buried under web pages about how to change the wallpaper!
