Gnome 3 extension to swap mouse buttons with a click

I typically use my touchpad on my laptop in a right-handed manner (i.e., the left-hand button does the primary action, and the right-hand button performs the secondary action). However, when I have an external mouse plugged in at work, I usually use it with my left hand, and want the buttons swapped.

I'm fairly certain there is a way to write an extension to Gnome Shell that will allow me to put an icon on the top bar, similar to the keyboard layout switcher or the wireless network manager, for example, that would make it easy to switch back and forth.

Does anyone know either (a) how to do this, or (b) how to write Gnome Shell extensions? My JavaScript knowledge wasn't good to begin with, and it's been a long time since I've touched it, but I have no idea what the interface is or what values I would need to manipulate to implement the extension.

Thanks!
