gnome (2.14.3) missing text in menus

I track debian-testing, and on one of the recent upgrades, I now have a "missing text problem". First noticed in the gnome Applications->Debian->Apps->System-> menu, where the first half of the menu listings had icons and text, and the second half was icons only. Moving the mouse over the "missing menu" option, caused the text to appear. This is also a problem from within Firefox (and other browsers), where text does not appear in the displayed page. Selecting a blank range (left click) with the mouse, causes the text to appear ... or grabbing the scrollbar and moving the page to the bottom, and back to the top will sometimes make the text appear.

I also created a new user, and logged in as that user, just to make sure there were no artifacts in my original .g* directories -- the behavior was the same.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Debian Testing doesn't include Gnome 2.16. Change your Theme ... I don't currently have such a problem with the default theme, but I have had at times in the past.

The problem was the nvidia driver (Dell M70 laptop) -- the older version NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1.run works, while the newer one NVIDIA-Linux-x68-1.0-8762-pkg1.run caused the problems described.
