Getting Conky to play nice with openbox and pcmanfm

I just installed Arch Linux on my netbook. I'm using Openbox like many other Arch users, and I use pcmanfm as my file manager and to display the desktop icons. I'm trying to get Conky to work, but I keep having problems. I can tweak the settings all I want, but Conky keeps disappearing either when I click the desktop or minimize all windows. In the .conky.rc file, there are four lines that control it's window management:
Code:
own_window
own_window_class
own_window_type
own_window_hints
I've tried about every combination I know of here, but Conky either disappears when I click the desktop, disappears when I minimize all windows, or doesn't show at all. If i set own_window_type to dock or panel, Conky doesn't disappear, but it ignores all of my settings, so I get this big ugly gray thing that covers all of my icons.

Use this instead:
Code:
own_window no
own_window_type normal
own_window_transparent yes
double_buffer yes

I've already tried that. It doesn't appear at all. Is there possibly some wmctrl thing I could use to keep it visible?

Probably the problem is because you have desktop icons enabled, conky is just like any other program but without windows decorations and background blended into the wallpaper, maybe moving it to the other side of the screen is the solution alway from the icons.
Try instead:
Code:
own_window no
own_window_type override
own_window_transparent yes
double_buffer yes
Regards

That doesn't do anything either. Conky only follows those own_window_* settings if own_window is set to yes. Otherwise, it just draws to the desktop.
I think I know what the issue is. PCManFM doesn't draw to the root window. Instead, it makes a new fake desktop window over the root window. Why it does this is just beyond me. It seems crazy. Whenever Conky is not its own window, it draws to that root window, but PCManFM is there to cover it up. If there was a way to either get Conky to draw to the PCManFM window or get PCManFM to not draw a background (be transparent), then Conky would show up. I might just go with something else for my desktop icons. Any suggestions?

Code:
own_window yes
own_window_class Conky
own_window_type desktop
PCManFM is one of the file managers I have installed alongside Openbox. The above configuration gives me a Conky display on every desktop and application windows move over it without problems. (Not Arch though.)

Hmm That doesn't work for me though. Did you use PCManFM to manage your desktop? It always covers up conky. I've just decided now not to use desktop icons.

This is a bit off-topic, but I'm looking for a simple, extremely lightweight application launcher for my desktop that I can just click an icon and launch an app. Basically something just like wbar, but one that autohides. I don't want taskbar functionality since I'm using fbpanel for that. Do you know of such a program?

Applications for creating desktop icons that I know of: iDesk, PCManFM, Roxfiler. There are others, the names of which I forget. I have never used them, because I have no interest in having desktop icons. Which is why I also have no idea if the icons are interfering with your Conky.
