"file open" common dialog box slow to populate file list if file starts with tilde

I'm running GNOME nautilus 2.20.0 in Fedora c8 (yes its old- is this fixed in a later version?). Some of my editors like nedit, MSword (disks are samba-mounted to windows) leave temp files that start with tilde. MSWord is especially bad about leaving its temp file when it exits or crashes. Anyway, if I'm running mozilla (seamonkey actually) and try to open a file from the directory which includes files like ~WRL1890.tmp, it can take a minute or so before the file list shows up. I sort of imagine it is trying to expand the ~ files and searching every LDAP directory it knows about for a user named WRL1890.tmp and only after that fails for every ~ file it can show me the list. Is there a way to turn off this behavior?

with a version of fedora that is 5 years and 10 versions "out of date"
-- no security fixes for the last 5 years --
your best bet is the "End Of Life" section over at fedoraforum.org

( also as i recall fedora 8 was a mess of bugs and problems )
