Question Fedora 20 - How to get Redhat 6.4 look and feel?

Dear Experts,

You may have seen my struggles with getting the wireless to work
with Redhat 6.4 on my laptop. One struggle after another. Sigh.

As an experiment, I downloaded Fedora 20 (not the desktop) and
installed it. The idea was to see if it would configure the wireless
on Fedora.

What a wonderful surprise, the wireless configured itself on installation!

Not only did it configure the hardware, it found the networks in the area.
Then asked for the password, and it was up and running.
Nothing to research or fix there.

Fabulous! What a pleasure when computers and software do the grunt
work for you. That's what they are supposed to do.

-----

However, what a disappointment in the Gnome interface.
(most RPMs have version 3.1)

The navigation is totally different from Redhat 6.4.
No menu bar at the bottom.
Things are contextual and appear or disappear.
My usual power user navigations are gone.

It really bothers me when software or website navigation changes.
The new navigation and learning curve wastes my time.
While providing no increase in utility.

I'd like to have the old look and feel of Redhat 6.4 Gnome.
(for the most part, most of the 6.4 Gnome RPMs are version 2.28)
It's very similar to MS XP.
Menu bars on the bottom.
Shutdown in the lower left corner.
Create folders/icons/launchers anywhere on the desktop I want.

Is there such a theme, desktop, etc that I can download for Fedora 20?

If so, what is it?

Thanks a lot!

I think you want to either
Quote:
yum install cinnamon
or
Quote:
yum install mate
I have been using cinnamon for a couple of years now. Even though Gnome 3 got a lot of praise in F21 I am still not comfortable.

well 6.4 is two versions out of date
and 7.0 is current
( and might not support wireless )

that is NOT a "surprise"
-- a server in the backroom dose not need wireless and there for redhat has little support for a laptop

RHEL is a SERVER !!!! class operating system
it's PRIMARY use is for the SERVER
it's secondary use is the desktop in the office
and thirdly
you buy laptops that are CERTIFIED!!! to work with RHEL

also fedora IS NOT RedHat
rhel6 uses gnome2 as the default desktop
or an older version of kde4 ( there is a kde3 fork repo )

so to get fedora 20 to look like rhel6

install KDE Desktop

BUT

fedora uses SystemV and RHEL6 uses SystemD
two very different start up and control system

they will
the current GNOME Desktop IS VERSION 3 !!!!

REDHAT !!! backports software fixes to the OS
rhel6 was software LOCKED when gnome2 was STILL used
so down the line in 5 years RHEL 6.11 WILL STILL HAVE GNOME2 !!!
even if the current GNOME Desktop is 4

and Fedora is a VERY VERY FAST passed development operating system,
using the "newest of the NEW!!!" ( for the most part)

Fedora changes VERY VERY FAST .

So fast that it might be imposable to upgrade from one version to the next ( sometimes)

if you do not like GNOME3 then install
xfce
lxde
KDE
E17

you can not install gmnome2 on fedora
-- there might be some themes and settings that cna make gnome sort of ?? maybe?? look like 2
-- maybe -

Yes. Cinnamon works well!

Turns out that you select the theme as you login,
with a drop down.

The classic minimize all (ctrl-alt-d) didn't work.

But now that I have a real menu, I was able to find in
Menu, Preferences, System Settings, Hardware, Keyboard

that it is Super-D, for desktop.

Thank you!

Now I can get to work.
