Fedora 15 Gnome 3 gnome-shell does not start

I have upgraded from F14 to F15 using preupgrade.
After selecting my account, password and GNOME on gdm and clicking login,
one monitor turns black, the other remains with F15 default wallpaper.
No widgets. Mouse buttons do nothing. Ctl-Alt-F2 switched to VT. Ctl-Alt-Bksp returns to gdm login screen.
KDE runs ok.
nVidia 9800GT proprietary driver.
Two 30" LCD monitors.
x86_64

The .xsession-errors and /var/log/messages complain about NetworkManager not running.
Is NetworkManager required? Is this just normal complaining because there is a widget setup by default?
I specifically do not use NetworkManager. If it is required how do I get around this?

I have Xinerama turned on in xorg.conf.
What can and can/should not be enabled in xorg.conf to be compatible with gnome3?

I have done yum groupupdate "GNOME Desktop Environment"
Xorg.0.log says nvidia driver and not “nouveau” driver is being used.
Any other packages that are required?

I have a .gnome2 directory but not a .gnome3 directory.

Any ideas on what to check and/or change to get gnome3 desktop working.

Xinerama bad, TwinView good

As it turns out the key piece of information was:
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0".

It seems as though having Xinerama turned on in xorg.conf causes this message to appear. Xinerama turns off RANDR. previous to the upgrade I had this message appear whenever I started an X window application from a terminal. These messages were correlated with xsane and imagej crashing. I seeked help previously regarding this message and its ills, but to no avail. Nobody seems to know why they appear, i.e. what request is being made that fails. Oh well...

Switching from Xinerama to TwinView on nVidia 9800GT with two 30" LCD monitors now allows gnome3/gnome-shell to start up.

Hope this information helps,

Fred
