FC 6 in a vm machine

running FC6 in VMWare.
installed VMware Tools and it is a cd on the desktop.
trying to install it.
cannot figure out what directory or folder to execute it from. Have both a rpm and a tar program.
tried mounting the cdrom on the desktop.
have also tried to do it from a command line but did not work.
Any help as to where to start would be appreciated.
not sure how to uncompress the cdrom to /tmp.
instructions seem to say to be running as SU and not a user?

Larry.

ok.... so....

su -
mount /media/cdrom
cd
tar zxvf /media/cdrom/*.tar.gz
cd vmware-tools (or similar directory name.. have a look at the tar output for the real directory name)
./vmware-installer.pl

FC6 will definitely NOT have prebuilt kernel modules here, no chance. as such you need to install gcc and the kernel-devel package and then agree to compile the modules as prompted by the script.

Thank you for the information and the quick response.
I kept trying things yesterday and did decompress it.
then hit the area where it asked for the GCC compiler and will now install that and see how far I get.

FC 6 in a vm machine

[larry@localhost ~]$ su -
Password:
[root@localhost ~]# mount /media/cdrom
mount: can't find /media/cdrom in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
[root@localhost ~]#

I got the above error when trying to mount the media.
vmtools is on the desktop.
Am I missing a cd command here to point to the media??
Thanks.
Larry.

OK I think I got it.
I copied the two files one rpm and one tar from the cdrom to my home directory. then I did the tar first and got somewhat confused.then did the rpm and all went well except that it converted to the tar install. but in the end I did set parameters for the display and all came to the end and a message to enjoy!!

I need to either learn more about tar and where it goes etc. or just stick with rpm.

Thanks so much to those who responded. I am a newbie but I try not to give up and quit.

Larry.
