What does this mean?

Because "gpg: skipped "peterjsefton@btinternet.com": secret key not available

gpg: signing failed: secret key not available

", you may need to select different mail options.

I haven't changed anything, but send/receive is no longer available, I just get the above message

That happened to me a couple of days ago. I investigated and found out, that I had lost my default keyring. Maybe that's the problem in your case as well. Read here: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu...question/38539

Another solution: Check if your key still exists in seahorse. In 8.10 it's a lil' buggy. You can find seahorse at Application > Accessories > Seahorse - Maybe the name is keyring or something similar.
