Evolution fails send/recieve, no errors

Hello,

I've posted the same problem on fedoraforum.org but have still not gotten a response. Hopefully I will get a quick response here.

I have Fedora 17 x86_64 (Gnome shell desktop) with the most recent updates. Evolution has worked fine until recently (I'm not sure when it started to fail). I have checked and double-checked all settings, and I have confirmed those settings work on another program (Opera Mail on Windows 7). I'm recieving from a POP server and sending with IMAP. Both ways are encrypted with TLS with password/login and they have the correct ports configured.

The problem is as follow: when I press "send/recieve" the usual tab that opens shows status "Waiting..." before quickly closing again. Also, there are no errors.

Trying to send a test message I recieve this error:
Code:
The reported error was "Failed to append to folder://local/Sent: Cannot get folder '/home/Serophis/.local/share/evolution/mail/local/.Sent': not a maildir directory.
Appending to local 'Sent' folder instead.".
I have a hunch that Evolution might have forgot the password for recieving mail but neglects to ask me for it again. Even with "remember password" unchecked both ways send/recieve still fails with no error messages (also without asking for password).

I'm expecting new mail on the account, but I don't get any - only my smartphone and Windows system does.

Camel_debug log after doing a send/recieve is attached on the thread on fedoraforum.org.

Google has been no help, and it's not like I can simply reinstall Evolution when it seems to be built into gnome.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi, Welcome to LQ!

LQ has a fantastic search function that may save you time waiting for an answer to a popular question.

With over 4 million posts to search it's possible the answer has been given.
I think you may have a permission problem, where the program can't update a status file (of some sort).

You might try in a shell(cli) listing dmesg with a pipe to only display lines that contain the string
Code:
dmesg | grep input

Thanks for the response!

Here's the output of 'dmesg | grep input' as user. I can't make much out of it.

Hi, trya different string to grep. I used "input" as an example.

You might try

dmesg | grep error

dmesg | grep fail

Or the program name.....

Oh, well now I feel a little silly, lol.

The only thing that stood out for me was with string 'fail':
Code:
[ 27.596163] mei 0000:00:16.0: wd: failed to find the client
'evolution', 'mail' and 'gnome' didn't show anything at all.

I tried 'error', 'send', 'receive', as well.

on Second thoughts, it could be a permission thing.
Quote:
The reported error was "Failed to append to folder://local/Sent: Cannot get folder '/home/Serophis/.local/share/evolution/mail/local/.Sent': not a maildir directory.
Appending to local 'Sent' folder instead.".
Do you and the program have the right to write to the mail group, or make yourself part of the mail group, and/or visa-vis.

Just a late night guess.

I can navigate to the folder just fine through nautilus, and I noticed that the "mail" directory didn't have "Access files" under groups. I changed that and tried to send a test mail but got the same error.

Send/recieve is still useless.

If there is a way to reset the application or reinstall it then I would have no problems with doing just that.

In this thread. it's been mentioned that the most recent updates as installed. It's hard to be sure, but the messages in the log that was attached to the thread on fedoraforum.org look almost like a first run of Evolution, or an initial run after an update. For example the complaints of this format "... not a maildir directory", almost as if some default configuration had been changed by a recent update.

In the thread on fedoraforum.org it was seemingly suggested that at one point, Evolution might have been run as root for debugging purposes. If it was run as root and attempting to use the same directories as a non-root User, maybe that caused a permission problem, as well as the sort of messages that are seen in the log. Unfortunately, the evo.log file is a log which, like .xsession-errors doesn't seem to have time stamps.

If the sequence of events is not clearly recalled, maybe there are logs that could be used to establish the sequence, perhaps as compared to the record of the time updates were installed?

I think this is what you're looking for:

So... This will probably make you guys laugh, but anyway...

I completely and utterly demolished/wiped the "mail" folder from existence in pure frustration and anger. I then proceeded to close evolution, and after a while, I decided to open it again. I was met with a box asking me to type in the password for my mail account.

...

...

It worked. Everything is okay. I... Well, I guess this is solved now. Thanks anyway.
