Evolution email is stuck in offline mode (Ubuntu 10.10)

I recently did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 (previously I had 10.04). I could not do an upgrade, because the package manager had a problem with unresolved dependencies resulting from the installation of a Nokia package for my CS-15 usb modem.

Since it was a new install, I did fresh backups of everything I needed, including evolution. After the install I tried restoring my email from the backup. Then I noticed that the send/receive button was disabled and so was the option to work online in the file menu.

The version of evolution is 2.30.3.

I thought this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1571313
had an answer to my problem but mine appears to be something different.

I tried deleting the .evolution folder in my home directory (as suggested in that other thread) and then re-installed evolution. That didn't work, however. I still have the same problem.

Oddly enough all my account details are still there! I tried checking the supported authentication in the account properties and that seems to work.

I've trawled a number of forum posts in this and other forums but haven't seen this problem described anywhere.

Does anyone have an idea how I can get my email to function again?

Achim

P.S. I have downloaded and installed claws-email with synaptic. This is a very dissatisfying work-around, because I'm used to Evolution and use some of its flexibility to my advantage (like selection of smtp-server based on the sending account and having multiple simultaneous dictionaries for spell checking... great when you want to mix languages in an e-mail). Now I'll have to learn claws.

20110124 Additional info:
The installtion of claws has not been entirely successful. I get the following authentication error:

Code:
* NetworkManager: network is offline.
* Connecting to POP3 server: pop3.schittko-edv.de...
[08:49:11] POP3< +OK Qpopper (version 4.0.5) at schittko1.schittko-edv.de starting.  <464.1295855352@schittko1.schittko-edv.de>
[08:49:11] POP3> APOP mail20683 6dfe5481b0f56d9f9c8e28639af01af9
[08:49:11] POP3< -ERR [SYS/TEMP] POP authentication DB not available (user mail20683): No such file or directory (2)
*** error occurred on authentication
*** Authentication failed.
Allegedly APOP is supported by the mail server. After switching to "PLAIN" authentication:

Code:
* Connecting to POP3 server: pop3.schittko-edv.de...
[08:52:16] POP3< +OK Qpopper (version 4.0.5) at schittko1.schittko-edv.de starting.  <485.1295855537@schittko1.schittko-edv.de>
[08:52:16] POP3> USER mail20683
[08:52:16] POP3< +OK Password required for mail20683.
[08:52:16] POP3> PASS ********
[08:52:29] POP3< -ERR [AUTH] PAM authentication failed for user "mail20683": Authentication failure (7)
*** error occurred on authentication
*** Authentication failed.
The result for "Login" authentication is the same. Under Evolution, the authentication method I used was "Password" and this is the method I use with my PC, Which is running Ubuntu 8.04 (unsure what version of Evolution).

I've checked and re-checked the password and managed to login via a webportal, so I'm not typing incorrectly.

Last night, when I first attempted this, an odd thing happened. After failing to connect with claws, I opened evolution and the send/receive function was working! This morning I have the same problem I described at the beginning, even after trying to login with claws.

Anybody have any ideas at all??

Hooray!! Claws mail now works. Please do not ask me how come.

I simply went though all the settings again. Selected the default authentication (Automatic) retyped the password for the umpteenth time and added an account for my yahoo mail, which I use for private stuff.

When I clicked "get mail" it worked!

Still, I'd like to figure out what exactly is wrong with Evolution. Any suggestions welcome!

Lightbulb Some observations

When my laptop is connected via a land line, evolution works normally. It only has this "offline" problem when I use the UMTS modem. I had a similar problem with Firefox, though I could still switch to online in the file menu. Using the information from this link, I turned the option off in Firefox and that worked. To date I have found nothing in Evolution which will do the same thing.

I suspect that Evolution is checking for an Internet connection by looking at the network manager. However, I'm using wvdial for UMTS and that seems to bypass network manager altogether. Certainly I see no indication of my connection in Network Tools, as it is called in Ubuntu 10.10.

After checking a number of config files I found the following entry in ~/.gconf/apps/evolution/shell/%25gconf.xml:
Code:
<entry name="start_offline" mtime="1297009343" schema="/schemas/apps/evolution/shell/start_offline" type="bool" value="false"/>
That is obviously what I want. So I checked evolution by starting it from the command line and tried to force online mode. Here's the result:
Code:
achim@achim-T43:~$ evolution --online
evolution-shell-Message: Network disconnected.  Forced offline.
EI: MAIL PREF
My suspicions are thereby confirmed. Anybody have any ideas on how to get Evolution to accept my UMTS connection?
