Edit "Places" Menu
 

Hi there (Fedora 12-Gnome)

I am using a separate partition as storage and I want the media-icons in the Places-Menu directed to the corresponding folders on the storage partition. Drag n Drop only works within the partition of the OS but dragging to the storage partition will only copy the folders leaving the originals and the link the same.

Any suggestions?

I installed alacarte (although it seems, that it is not possible to edit the Places-menu with it) but always when I edit something in it it crashes and I get the following report:

Although the main issue is the Places-menu I would also like to add the submenu "education" to the Application menu so how do I fix alacarte?

Okay although I didn't get alacarte working the Education-sub menu appeared when I installed a program for that sub menu.

The problem with the Places menu remains... any ideas?

The places menu is using your folder bookmarks in your file browser to create shortcuts, to add bookmarks, simply drag and drop in your file manager the folder you want to bookmark into the area to the left below the one where storage devices are shown.

Looking at my Gnome display, it may be a simple as putting a label on the filesystem ...

As I wrote in my first post: That only works within the system partition.
I have simply created Shortcuts of the storage folders and put them into the original media folders. That's one double-click more but I haven't found a better solution yet...

AFAIK, you can add to the Places menu simply by dragging a folder to the lower half of the Places list in Nautilus, and removing or editing those entries is as simple as right-clicking on the entry you need, again in Nautilus.
I don't believe any other file manager would do the same, since there's a level of integration between Nautilus and Gnome's Places menu.

Could you clarify what you are trying to move to the partition? The partition will be mounted somewhere under the root partition so saying "only works within the partition of the OS" doesn't make sense because there is nothing outside the partition of the OS.

I wasn't talking about dragging and dropping one folder TO another - I was talking about dragging it to the list of folders you can have on a one-click access in Nautilus, which also show up in the Gnome Places menu.

Are you right clicking and selecting a destination? Did you select Move to or Copy to?

If dragging and dropping, do you see a plus sign on the icons you are moving?

Sometimes the default behavior is different depending on whether you are dragging to another filesystem or another directory on the same filesystem. On the same filesystem, the directory entries for the source and destination directories are updated and the files seem to move. Going to a different filesystem, the actual files need to be copied and the default is to copy rather than move. It does depend on which file browser you are using, but this behavior is also true for windows.

You need to hold down the SHIFT key while dropping to move the files you selected and the CTRL key while dropping to copy the selected files to the target.

sorry but i didn't understand your problem very well. I will try to give you solution for what i understand.
1) To add certain folder in your places menu just open that folder in nautilus click place menu -->> add as bookmark
