I'm trying to play a couple DVDs. Steve Martin movies, Roxanne and The Jerk. When I try to run them in... well... anything, they don't really get anywhere. I can go through the stills on one of the vobs on both of them, you know, the Interpol and FBI things.

I play You, Me, and Dupree just fine. They're all iso9660, and the only difference I'm aware of between them is Roxanne was printed in 1998, The Jerk was in 2005, and You, Me and Dupree was in 2006.

All of these movies play just fine in Windows, so I expect The Jerk and Roxanne were encoded differently, or use a unique 'protection' scheme to You, Me, and Dupree.

Is this a common problem?

What program are you using to try and view these DVDs?

Do you have libdvdcss installed?

I've tried VLC, noatun, mplayer, xine, and kaboodle.

libdvdcss.so occurs under the directory VLC is installed in a search, but I don't know if it's using it or not.

Updating to 2.6 seems to have fixed the problem. I couldn't directly access /dev/hdd before, for some reason (my DVD drive), so I was trying to play the .vob and .ifo's, as mounted files.

I found out the device needs to be directly accessed to bypass the 'protection', so... for some reason, I couldn't seem to do that with 2.4.
