dvd to xvid v. slow with either mencoder or transcode

Hi There,

I have a fujitsu n6010, p4 3.2 (HT), 1.5GB RAM. I'm running ubuntu 6.06 (though I did load KDE over the top). I am i686 kernel though original install was all i386.

My problem is that ripping DVD's to xvid is so sloooooow! I get about 5fps on single pass and about 12 dropping to 7 fps on 2 pass (second figure for second pass).

I've been using dvdrip with transcode. But qam now experimenting with packages, though mencoder related frontends seem even slower.

Has anyone had performance issues like this?

Cheers.

I never used transcode, but I know mencoder. Can you give the whole mencoder command line?

Yves.
