One question: do you want to use that external driver only to save your data, or do you also intend to boot from there? Forgive me for so many questions but I still am not sure about what exactly you plan to do. This is what I understand (correct me if something is wrong): you have one pc with one internal hard disk that is 99% full, and one portable hard disk that's 100% empty.

With that scenario in mind there are many choices, some of them:
  • leave the system in your current drive and move your data to the portable one, this way you would continue to boot from your old disk, this would be very easy to accomplish and is the option I recommend for the sake of simplicity.
  • move *everything* (including your system) to the new drive, and take the other drive physically off your case, this would involve a bit more of work, nothing monstrous though. In this case your box would have *no disk at all* except the portable one. Meaning that without the portable device you will not be able to boot.
  • move *everything* (including your system) to the new drive, and take the other drive physically off your case, then disassemble the portable drive and attach its HD physically inside your box, this would involve even more work (and I assume that the portable device's HD is a standard IDE-ATA or SATA one, which most are). In this case your box would have a bigger disk and would not depend on an external device to boot.

Please, try to describe exactly what you are trying to do because the procedure will vary from case to case. If none of these options suits you, then describe *exactly* what do you want as I described those above, with as much detail as possible.

i like the first idea- "leave the system in your current drive and move your data to the portable one, this way you would continue to boot from your old disk, this would be very easy to accomplish and is the option I recommend for the sake of simplicity." help with that if possible

And the answer is yes... my external is 100 percent empty...

the internal is 100 percent full

Rrrright, then one step at a time, is the new drive already partitioned and formatted?

Hint: if it isn't already partitioned and/or formatted, install gparted and use it to partition the drive properly and format it. If you don't know what to do just create a big unique partition that fill all the drive. Ask back if you have problems with this step.

Also look at "lsof +L1" to list deleted files. Temporary files are often deleted as soon as they are created, to prevent stale temp files if a service or program crashes.
Code:
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NLINK NODE NAME
kio_file 5322 jschiwal 7r REG 8,6 2338778 0 115088 /var/tmp/kdecache-jschiwal/ksycoca (deleted)
firefox 6398 jschiwal 71u REG 8,6 0 0 614417 /tmp/etilqs_iPJwI87uBX2dYaN (deleted)
ktorrent 32683 jschiwal 16r REG 8,6 3614016 0 508217 /var/tmp/kdecache-jschiwal/ksycoca4 (deleted)
One LQ poster had two 13 GB files listed. His server only had a 60 GB partition for the root partition, so this was what was causing the problem.

By looking at the output, it doesn't look you set up your entire 160GB hard drive to be used under Linux. Are you dualbooting?

Can you post the output of the following commands?
Code:
fdisk -l
Code:
mount
