Diskless computer boot

Hi all,

I have plan to set up an centralized environment for my home network, where I want to implement on one server DNS/DHCP/squid/mail/TFTP/samba/LDAP/Kerberos-servers and set up my home machines to boot from central server. All mentioned servers are not problem for me to set up, only what I still do not understand is how to make image part ( image units will download ) and have it on central location. Any hint is welcome
Thank you in advance

Google for "linux pxe boot server" (or, I guess, "openbsd pxe boot server") - you should come up with lots of great "howto's". For example:

http://linux-sxs.org/internet_serving/pxeboot.html

The client PC's BIOS, of course, needs to support network boot.

Hi Paulsm4, thank you for commnet,

actulally I made this, I can boot client from TFTP server remotelly and it works, for OS installation. For debian exist project
http://www.informatik.uni-koeln.de/fai/

my idea is, for all my home comupters not to have OS installed on them, but to have OS image on central server. So it will look like

1) switch on comp.

2) get ip address, boot to OS image from central server

3) after OS is booted, my home directory is network share on central server

3) I work all time on share dir.

so intersting is how to created all environment, openoffice, mozilla, .... to have as image I will boot to once I switch on my computer, then instead to patch 5 computers I will patch only one image

Suggestions are welcome

Thank you and regards,

For Debian you should have a look at the Linux Terminal Server Project, it will do the work for you. http://wiki.debian.org/LTSP/Howto
