I'm in my second day of trying out AwesomeWM, and I think it would go well with a program that manages the desktop. One that displays the wallpaper, desktop icons, handles desktop right-click menu, and might possibly also be a file manager.
I've used rox-filer (with IceWM) in the past. I'm also considering Thunar and PCManFM.
I'd prefer something that doesn't need a session manager, although that's a preference and not a requirement.
