Delete windows system folders?

After installing Ubuntu 11.04 I find that I do not have a dual boot option anymore. I do not consider this to be a problem, but now I have a lot of disk space claimed by a windows os (xp) that I do not want to use. Can I just delete the windows system files or is there a better solution to this? I have two hard disks installed in the box. One is partitioned 50/50 and contains the os's the other is a one volume disk that I have used for storage only.

If you can mount the Windows partitions from Linux, you could just delete the contents and go.

It would likely be more efficient to back up any important data to another location, then reformat the partitions and rebuild the file systems with fdkisk (or cfdisk) + mkfs or with gparted. Windows native files systems do not understand the Linux file permission structure.
