Customizing RHEL4 X11 config with dual monitors

Hi all,

I'm by no means an expert when it comes to things X11 so I'm hoping somebody can help. In a nutshell, I have a RHEL server that has two displays connected to it. One display is just a 23" monitor but the other is a projector that displays on a wall in a conference room. The system is set up properly as far as X working with both monitors. The wall is "to the right" of the monitor, and I can drag applications from one to the other, etc. without any problems. There is one thing that's a bit annoying, however. It seems that there is no rhyme or reason to where application windows appear when they are created. If I launch an application from the menu, which appears on the monitor, the application may appear on the wall. If I'm interacting with an application displayed on the wall and cause another window to open it might decide to show up on the monitor. I want to have the window manager create new windows based on where they're launched (or at least where the mouse currently is) so that users don't have to constantly go back and forth between the wall and the monitor just so they can see the new window and drag it back to where they want it. How can I go about enforcing this behavior?

On a related note, another thing I'd like to do is make gnome-panel run on the secondary display, not the primary one. Is this something fairly easy to do?

This is a very generic RHEL4 setup using the defalt installation of gnome, metacity, etc.

Thanks,

-Bruce
