Customise date format in Gnome clock applet tooltip?

I'm trying to customise the format of the date displayed in Gnome clock applet's tooltip. So far I haven't found any way to do this.

I know how to customise the time display in the clock applet itself - but there doesn't seem to be any way to change the way the tooltip displays the date. I'm stuck with, for example, 'Thursday June 02 (EST)' when I want to display '2 June 2011'. There is no entry in gconf-editor for the tooltip date format.

I have checked the system language settings and they are ok, and the system date format does not use the format displayed by the clock applet's tooltip. Is the tooltip's date format hard-coded? (I hope not, because that would be really really dumb...)

Thanks.

You need the GNOME configuration editor to do that (usually it's not installed by default, so that maybe you have first to install it using your software manager). Once installed launch it, then navigate to /apps/panel/applets/clock/prefs. Here you have to edit two keys: 1. format --> custom, 2. custom_format --> %e %b %Y %H:%M and the trick is done. See the screenshot below to check what I mean.

@colucix: Thanks for the reply, but I've already done that:

What you're suggesting does not change the date format in the tooltip - it only changes the time/date format in the main clock display. And 'gconf-editor' is the Gnome configuration editor.

I want to change the format for the tooltip date display that pops up when the mouse is held over the clock applet.

Oops.. sorry, I missed the tooltip keyword.
