CUPS 1.3.9-11 with HPLIP 2.8.12-1 prints meaningless garbage (Debian Sid/Exp.)

Dear LQ Peoples,

I'm using an HP DeskJet F300 Series printer with CUPS 1.3.9 and HPLIP 2.8.12 (on Debian Sid/Experimental amd64). When I try to print a document (any document) from any application (even a test page from the HPLIP GUI), the pages print out with this type of output:

Code:

Here's the output from hp-check:

1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Done.

And since the forum software complains about a character limit, here's the CUPS error log in all its unclipped glory: http://pastebin.com/f4d6a8b62

Printing worked fine before upgrading both HPLIP and CUPS (I upgraded both at the same time, so I'm not sure which is the culprit, though I suspect CUPS), and I'd rather avoid the whole mess of downgrading all the packages and their dependents/dependencies to their previous versions, if at all possible. Any solutions are appreciated..

Thanks.

I'm getting getting the same situation with an HP DeskJet 3740. CUPS 1.3.9-12 and HPLIP 2.8.12-1.

I find that downgrading just the cups package (and nothing else, not even its dependencies) to 1.3.8-1lenny4.1 will cause everything to print normally again. So one of the files in that package alone is the cause of this. I'm not sure of anything other than that though.

Update: Found this bug report already filed for cups:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=511009

Update mk II: Latest cups package is now 1.3.9-14, yet the bug still exists.

Update v3: The bug has been updated to serious with a temporary workaround. Check out the bug report for it. 1.3.9-15 should see this fixed.

Update part 4: A New Hope... wait, wrong intro... Anyway, 1.3.9-14+b1 works perfectly fine now, no more garbage text on my end. I'm not sure if it's part of test, unstable, or experimental, but check it out. Otherwise, I'd consider it case closed.

This is the same with HP DeskJet D2460. It was also printing pdf-source-like garbage, and also downgrading cups (only the basic package and nothing else) from 1.3.9-12 to 1.3.8-1lenny4 solved the problem. It may not depend on the type of the printer and may affect all deskjet with this version.

instead of cups-devel you can install libcupscgi1-dev in debian squeez.
