Create account at login screen.

I have a common space computer that many people use and I would like it so each person can create a username and password at the login screen. Is this possible? I will run any distro that this can be done with. Thanks for the help

Yes, it can be done. How difficult it will be, though, depends on your needs. You say that's it's a common space computer...but what do you want to run on it? If all you need is a web-browser, then pretty much any distro of Linux can run in kiosk mode, and only provide folks with a browser. If you want folks to have access to terminal windows, word processors, etc., then you may have to get a little more creative. This is a pretty good article with some food for thought about this, and some instructions for Debian

Some of the info in it is a bit dated, but the points are still valid. User setup at the login screen, will be problematic.

Why not enable a guest account and then have users request their own accounts from the administrator? Perhaps with a web form.

If you only have a finite number of people in this common space, then it should be relatively easy and one time (ie: not worth the trouble which Tb0ne implies is coming your way).

If you have a lot of people... well then you could have a hundred users really fast who almost never login.

Some of the new distro's have a new html5 greeter. It may be that one could construct a greeter that allows some new user creation.

The ability to create a user is normally restricted so there could be some security issue where a smart user could take over this system.

I might look at creating a single account where the only task one could do is create a new user. Some companies have password reset login accounts for this. It would be pretty easy to leave a background image to say log on with this account and use some default password or even authenticate with their id number. Then the single task allowed would be to create a user.

It would usually be easier to bulk create users.
